A glaze is a thin layer of glass fused to the clay. If it is formulated badly or fired too low, it can leach metals into food. We take this seriously, so every glaze we use goes through the same process before it touches a plate.
First, the recipe is checked to exclude lead and cadmium entirely. Then test tiles are fired alongside each kiln load and inspected for crazing, pinholes and surface changes. Finally, finished pieces from each new glaze batch are sent to an independent laboratory for leach testing.
We will publish the results for the glazes in the first collection on this site. If a glaze does not pass, it does not go on tableware. That is the whole rule.
